The close ratio T-19 is a nice tranny, but $920 for a rebuilt one is excessive. I charge $475 to rebuild one and cores are an easy find in the $150 range.
If you're on a budget, just keep your eyes open for a T-19 from an 80's Ford 2wd. They're pretty much all 4:1 first gear.
If you're running 31" tires, 3.50 gears are too low to use first gear. You'd be starting off in second. 3:1 or 3.25:1 gears would be a better setup.

How could I tell a t19 from a t18 in the junkyard? From what I know they look identical from the outside. How could I tell the 4:1 ratio from other ratios without tearing into it or driving it?

I went with a TOD(170rts?) 4spd OD tranny. I cruise @70 running 2600 rpms with my 4.11's and 31" tires.
easy swap I did have to get my center driveshaft stretched $110. It's a 3spd + OD for the 4th gear. They came in mid 80's 150/250's It's no racing tranny but fine so far for daily driving.
