F-350 tranny

Post by Kraig »

I looked at a f-series truck at lunch today. I think it's a F-350. What kind of 4 speed was behind a 390 in one of these trucks? Is it desireable for a tranny? It looks like a '68 (nice grille!!).

I dont know the exact tranny it would be, but the one in these trucks is great for heavy use such as pulling/ hauling large loads. But, from my experience with the one in my 67 and other people's experiences I know of, the only problem is they are hard to downshift into second gear. You got to get really slow and almost stop before they will go in second without grinding. Everyone I have talked to has this problem with these transmissions. The later 73+ versions dont seem to have the same problem. Hope this is of some help.

It's usually an NP-435. You can get into second without too much trouble if you doubleclutch it and get the RPMs up first. Since second is so low, the synchro has a hard time matching it quickly.

NP435 (Reverse is down) or T18 (reverse is up).

Yup, and just a joy to deive in the city. Farm truck trannys that are made for 2 ton trucks but somehow ended up in pickups. I guess pickups were actually intended for work back then.
I drive my T-18 mostly without the clutch. My 435 doesn't seem to like me doing that.

I drove my np435 without the clutch I would not recommend it as this caused premature syncro wear . It had about 275,000 on it when I got the truck and now it is pretty much shot although I can still drive it -noisy like you would not belive .
I like these 4 speeds they take a lot of abuse and last a long time .
PArts are still available and if my old 435 isn't beat up too bad I am going to rebuild it for another spare :drive:

I drove my 72 (T-18) to work every day for 2 weeks, through the city no less, with a broken clutch pivot. Only once in a while I would have to put it in granny and start the engine to start out at a stop light, most of the time I could get it slid into granny and just idle toward the light until it changed. It's just a simple matter of matching the rpms to the ground speed.
