Disk brake goodies from salvage yard

Post by oldbiker »

OK, I went to junkyard, they have everything I need to to do disk brake conversion..I need it for 1/2 ton & 3/4 ton..Will be off of vans..This guy is a horse trader..what is this worth.. I need a ball park idea.. he has enough that rotors will be good... gonna rebuild calipers. I will go through all the threads to get a complete list of what I need. I know that is in here, I think I remember a tutorial as well.. I need to know what y'all think they would be worth if I pull them and what it is worth if he does.. Thanks gents

I enquired about the front end of a donor truck at a local salvage yard and he wanted $250 and I'm not sure that included the power steering box. He would pull it out.

Well Gents...I have read all 26 posts about the disk brake conversion..I must be getting stupid in my old age.. I found a lot of threads that contradict each other. Some say to change the spindle, others say it is not necessary. I do know that none of the trucks I looked at are camper specials for the added sway bar  SO I will continue to look. I do really need to thank customcrew for the heads up on van parts being different. That could have been major bummer  I am great full for all the info I gathered. I do have Strange looking disk set up off of a 71 or 2. It is just I beams. spindles. rotors & calipers. I guess Calipers are just cores . I'll pull off the drum stuff and just see what will fit before I get rebuilt calipers. I do wonder about the proportioning valve. They must be super expensive, due to all the work people do to get used ones..Then I will see about the Power assist and why I can't use the one that is one the truck now. Many thanks Y'all

you only need to change the spindles if you get the correct year and disc to fit on your exsisting spindles. i think 73 and 74 will interchange without having to change spindles. other than those years you will have to change the spindles to match the discs you are putting on, that info is in the front disc swap page for a complete interchange of spindles or not

i am just glad you read it and found out the info. i wasn't 100 percent sure and even pm keith and ask him but didn't hear back. i just remember avergef250 say somthing about a van he had and changing the steering box and he used one out of a truck. said it turned left when he turned right. i guess if you got the steering box you could make it work but then just opens another can of worms.

It might have been because it was in the middle of the night that I got so confused. The best thread for me was flatbedfords...all made perfect logic to me till the end of it. 6 new wheels for $50   I thank you guys and I have 2 of them to do so I outta be good at when I'm finished.. I also will take many pics to add to the great amount of info here. I am so glad I found this web site

If you are doing the discs on an F250, you do NOT need to change spindles, The spindles are the same on drum and disc trucks. Find a set of dual caliper spindles and remove the caliper bracket and backing plate. They will bolt right on to your drum brake spindles. Then get the rebuilt calipers, and new discs and bearings/seals. You wil probably have to go to a salvage yard to get the proportioning valve.
You can look for dual caliper disc brake spindles here:
http://car-part.com/
Rock Auto sells the calipers.

Good luck!

Anyone ever check to see if '79 Lincoln rotors and dual piston calipers will fit a 1/2 ton? They look to be 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern (Mine is an F350 so I don't need them and I'm helping the owner get back some of the $2,000 he was ripped off for the car because the PPO's ex-wife burned the title)

The Van spindles may be the same. The Vans, at least a 69 Van, is a rear steer vehicle like our trucks...
I had one in the shop last month and I looked.

As far as interchangeability, the pivot bushings on the I-beams have a larger inner diameter on the 350s than the 250s.
