Transmission Leak

Post by NewBlueTruck »

I have a 3.03 (3 spd column shift) in my '72 f-100 (360ci) that is leaking. I only get the leak when the truck is driven and I seem to remember reading a post that it could be a clogged line of some sort. I've taken a look at the transmission but can't see an obvious point of origin for the leak (there's a lot of fluid on it), however I'm pretty sure it's not the drain plug. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for or what the problem might be? Will the fix most likely require removing the transmission?

Just trying to get an idea if I need to start saving for a transmission overhaul at this point.

Thanks, Chris

You need to go to the local carwash and clean the underside very well, making sure you get it as clean as possible. Then just drive it a little and see where the leak is coming from.

A standard transmission doesn't have any lines going to it like an automatic transmission has.

Here's what I found after replacing converter seals and re-installing the tranny during a recent motor rebuild:

Like Keith says clean it.

I was surprised just how much torque needed to be applied to the two tranny lines coming from the case. I removed the two adapter fittings that mine has, teflon taped them and then re-installed making sure they were real tight. Then I hooked the lines back up after teflon taping the adapter male portion and cranked down on these as well.

Same thing at the radiator. That tranny fluid under pressure can find just about any excuse to leak if the fitting aren't right.

Only other places would be the fill tube grommet, and the pan gasket. The other places would not be as likely to crud up the pan or bellhousing.

Couple other ideas:

My power steering pump leaks and this gets blow back onto the bellhousing and is same color as tranny fluid.

A buddy of mine had a rear intake leak that dribbled down bellhousing and looked like dirty fluid leaking out the bottom of the bell.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I've been meaning to rent a pressure washer in order to clean my garage floor. I guess I'll spray the transmission while I have it. Once I do that I'll take pictures of the leak and post them here.

I looked at my transmission leak again and it appeared to be originating from the back of the transmission. I called a local transmission shop and they said it would only be about $60 to replace the rear seal so I took it in. The mechanic informed me that it is not the rear seal but (I am paraphrasing as I don't remember exactly what he called it) it is the shift linkage seal and it requires removing the transmission, disassembly etc. He quoted me $680. I told him not to do it right now. Does anyone here know if this sounds logical and if the price is right? Frankly, it's not leaking that much oil (he said it was a half quart low) and it's been leaking for over a year (I only drive this truck maybe 1,500 miles a year). Does anyone have any recommendations? At a minimum I'm going to seek a second opinion.

for just a seal. no i think that is too much money for a seal replacement. those 303 are a one handed removal. it actually take two hands but it can be done with one if you balance it right. no i think that is too much money to remove tear down and replace a seal.
