1999 Ranger Speedo not reading right

Post by cghstrojan08 »

I have a 1999 ranger with a 5 speed manual. The speedo reads about 7 miles an hour faster than I am actually going. What could be the problem? The tires are not smaller than stock and then gauge is stock. Then truck has about 117,000 miles on it.

How long have had the truck?

Since it was new?

A little more info would help.

I have had the truck almost a month. Everything is stock on it. It does not have ABS. Someone told me about some sensor on the rear axle where the ABS thing is. But how does it work if I don't have ABS.

Do you have the stock sized tires on it?

Does it have the stock rear end gears?

As far as I know of, everything is stock. The tires are not smaller than stock and the rear end doesn't look like anyone has touched it.

The sensor is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), not sure if a '99 ranger has one with a plastic gear or is all electronic though. Normally when tire sizes are changed the plastic gear needs to be replaced, if it is all electronic it is done with a tuner or the dealers programmer. If it is consistently 7mph off, that would not be a tire or gear size problem, since a different sized tire would cause it to be off by a %.

Do you have an electronic odometer or an analog? Normally electronic means there is no VSS gear to be replaced, analog means there is. If it is electronic the sensor itself could be bad, and it even could be if it has a gear.

All Ford trucks have had atleast rear ABS since the late 80's. It's standard. Starting in '92 Ford did away with speedo cables on everything. The speedo runs off the tone ring in the rear axle.

I don't know how to recalibrate what you have. Talk to the dealer.

Thanks guys for all of the info. I have been talking to some other people and they also say that there is rear abs and that I need to take it to the dealer to get fixed. I have to take my mom's explorer to the dealer to get a recall fixed on it. I will talk to them. I just hope they don't charge me out the wazoo to fix such a little thing.

I replaced the RABS sensor that detects the speed. It didn't fix it. I don't know what to do now. This is why I hate electonics.
