C6 to AOD
Hey,
I am thinking about switching from my C6 to an AOD from Broader performance for my '68 F-250. Do you think that this is a good idea or should I just stick with the C6. I would like to gain gain a little gas mileage and not have it running at such high RPMs at highway speeds. Im looking to get around 350 to 400 horses out of my 390 when I rebuild it. Any thoughts and opinions are much appreciated.
Thanks,
Corbin

So is the AOD only for smaller engines? If it won't work is there any other way to get an overdrive benind my 390?

I know that the AOD has an integral bell housing that only has the bolt pattern for the small block fords.
There may be someone out there who has made and adapter for it but I don't know.
I would think the easiest upgrade to overdrive would be either to add a gearvendors or other such od unit or getting a zf tranny.

Yep, you're going to be looking at a GearVendors add-on overdrive unit...or possibly an NV4500, if you prefer rowing the gears.

re: C6 to AOD
They do make an adapter to run an AOD on a 390-460 ford engine but the price aint pretty. Google "aod adapter" and it should take you to the distributors.

re: C6 to AOD
The AOD was only used with the 302 from '85-'93 in the F-150 for a reason. Not the toughest thing out there stock.

re: C6 to AOD
Stay with the C6 my Brother.
It's probably one of the best Automatic transmissions ever made.
AOD's are Worthless and Weak for having in a "MANSIZE" Truck.
Any gain that you could achieve is not worth the REDUCED strength and reliability with an AOD.

http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_fe.htm place I found a while back.
The AOD is not an upgrade unless your shelling out the cash to have one that is built up to handle more HP/Tq.
But done right would be pretty nice and you'd be out of the box.
I've torn up one of each so it's not like either are indestructable, put the right guy behind the wheel and take pictures.

re: C6 to AOD
I have an AOD on my '70 SWB built by TPI and just added a Lentech manual valve body with electric overdrive delete. Lentech makes a complete AOD that will handle an advertised 1000HP. Keith has their website link on the site. I know mine was built to handle up to 400HP and with the valve body it is a blast to drive. I bought the AOD from TPI last year at the GoodGuys car show in Del Mar for 1200 and no tax with many extra parts like trans cooler, custom dip stick. I have it behind a 5.0 EFI crate engine that shows 270 HP on the dyno. I can chirp the tires in all three gears then flip the switch and use OD on the freeway. There have been a lot of improvements made in the aftermarket on all transmissions, C4, C6 etc. You pays your money and takes your choice. As for gas mileage that depends on you, I got in the high 13's after installing the valve body having a lot of fun. I have gotten as high as 22 but not on a regular basis. One thing is that the stock C4 crossmember will work just fine on the AOD but just has to be moved back about 3 inches. You will also have to have a new driveshaft made to fit and Oh another thing is the shift linkage, I used the stock C4 and made a custom bracket to mount on the trans and it works great.
