Transmission swap

Post by rs2600 »

I have a -70 4x4 F100 with a 390/manual 4speed. What parts are needed to change over to an automatic?

Transmission, torque converter, flexplate...kickdown and related hardware for the carb, trans cooler. Probably a couple things I missed, too...

So I can use the old transferbox and just get a 4x4 auto trans + some other small details or can I use any truck trans?

you'll also need a shifter either on the column or through the floor. it will have to be from a 4x4 because the tail shaft is short on the 4x4 versions of the auto transmissions.

Ratcheting floor shifter would be easiest, I would think.

rs2600,

I'm just curious why you would want to swtich to an automatic from a standard. I belong to a lot of forums, import and domestic, passenger cars and trucks, and everyone's always trying to convert automatics to manuals. About 5 years ago a buddy and I did a trans swap on his Dentside SWB 4x4, and we pulled out the C6 in favor of an NP435. Actually pretty easy to do. He left the column shifter in there just to confuse people. :D

If you prefer an automatic and go through with this, enjoy. You should make your truck the way you like it. But there are a lot of people who search hard to find manual transmissions because they believe them to be better. You may want to rethink this if you can.

No, your t-case won't fit an auto. You need to find a C-6 and 205 t-case from a 73-79 F-100 4x4.

One of the biggest reasons why I want to change to an automatic is that I'm to old and lazy to shift and I don't like stickshift with big engines and I espcially don't like the truck trans. Since I'm not doing any off-road driving, just cruising around town, the driving will be a lot more comfortable with an automatic. Biggest problem with the conversion is that there are no parts available in Sweden. I have to send for them from the states. Therefore it is important that I get info on ALL the parts needed to change over. What I do know I need is a shifter, kickdown kinkage, flexplate, converter and a C6 with matching t-case. Anything else?
