Dana 60 question

Post by RedneckTexan »

I've found a 78 f-250 with a 351m, np435, and D60 rear for $600.00. And I want to pull a gooseneck with it. Will D60 handle it, or will I have to upgrade to a D70 or D80 :? (It's a 32' gooseneck with a 20,000 pound load capacity.)

Dana axles handle weight very well. The 60 and 70 have pretty much the same hubs. Power is the 60's limiting factor. If you're running more than 400 lb/ft towing heavy loads D60 carrier bearings will not handle it. It will just flat wear out in time.

The flame snorting top-fuel caliber 351M is a force to be reconned with, but the 60 should handle it just fine.

You won't be going too fast with 20K+ GCVW and a 351M. It'd be fun though.

Alrighty, I'm just looking for a good tow rig to pull a gooseneck around without serious modification. I'll probably be doing 35-40 tops with it.

That's what you think until you start on the DOWN part of the grade!

Yeah I've had LOTS of fun going down hill with heavy loads  When we hauled my 68 F-350 dump truck home we went from 35 to 60 real quick  Anyway, I just wanna make sure that I don't hook up the gooseneck and go a 1/4 mile down the road and blow the rear-end to pieces

That truck should do fine if the rear's in decent shape.

Alrighty, I'll call the guy and see if I can go look at it. I'm sure my F-350 dually would pull it, but with the hydraulic ram under the bed, there's nowhere to mount the ball.
