Putting in a driveshaft.

Post by import600 »

I've got a driveshaft that needs to be installed. Thing is Its got the Ujoints installed, and now when I try to slip it into the tranny and onto the rear, the Ujoint on the back of the driveshaft gets in the way. I've tried to press these joints out, but dang are they tight. They won't budge. But otherwise they are solid. No play at all. How should I tackle this. Thanks

Where it goes into the transmission should be a slip joint, that should compress in enough that you can get the back in first then pull the front into the tranny.

You should be able to slip the Yoke into the Tranny enough to get the U-joint into the Rear Yoke. You should have about 1.5" of Yoke movement to allow for the suspention to move and not bind.

Ok, I know I don't have that much movement. what can I do to fix this? If I move the axle back then the pinion is off right? So new driveshaft?

I had to use a large flatblade screwdriver and finagle and pry around on mine to get it to slip in. I fought it awhile, thinking I was gonna have problems but it finally fell right into place.

sometimes the slip joint has been pumped full of grease. it will hydraulic lock before it can be fully compressed. mark it, and slip it apart, pick out some of the grease and see if it fits.

Sounds to me like the driveshaft you're trying to install isn't the original one for this truck? It's definitely too long, as stated above you should have some play, to compensate for the suspension movement while the truck's on the road. If the slip yoke is bottomed out in the transmission, you're going to ruin a tranny really fast. You'll have to get that shortened a little bit. Any machine shop should be able to handle it.

I had no idea what it came out of Tim. I bought it from a member who told me that it would bolt right up. But it didn't.

I brought it to a driveshaft place, measured what i needed. They cut it, balanced it and I had them install new u joints. Fits well now. looks good too. Thanks for the help and concern everyone.

There were a couple different yokes used on these rear ends. The shaft could have came from a pickup with a short yoke and you have a longer one.
