T18/19 vs NP435
I read on another thread about the whole up/down for reverse issue and whether or not it's a T18/T19/NP435 and never really saw a conclusion. However, I this drew me to a question:
Were the Borg Warner transmissions and New Process transmissions usually grouped with a particular engine family? For example, would the T18 usually by used with Winsor blocks and the NP435 usually used with FE blocks? If not, why would they have had two families of 4-speed standards with unsynchronized first gears? From a manufacturing standpoint, wouldn't that have been redundant?

May just be what was available from the supplier when Ford was building that truck? I wonder which one is more common? Of the 4 F350 bumps I'm familiar with, 2 '67s, a'70, and a '72, all FE powered, only my '70 has a T18.

re: T18/19 vs NP435
I'd have to agree, it seems the NP435 is much more common. I'm not sure where cooltoolguys was manufactured but, FLATBEDFORDs F350, my F350, and the other '67 F350 we bought together, all where made in the Mahwah plant, and FLATBEDFORDs is the only one with the T18. Go figure. That's a pretty good question that I'd like to know the answer to also.
By the way, those trucks are the 4 he is refering to.

I was going to include the Mahwah connection too. But I got lazy.

re: T18/19 vs NP435
FLATBEDFORD, your truck came with a T18 and 360 stock? If so, that shot a hole in my theory. LONGBED, what engine/trans combos do you have in your trucks?
Does anyone have a 302W with a stick? If so, what trans?
Anyway I was trying to figure out what trans my truck has. I expected it to have an NP435 but my buddy in AZ who has actually driven it says that reverse is up and to the right, indicating a T18. I'll have to verify that when it arrives.
Is there anything in particular I should know about the T18? Weaknesses to look out for? Is there a chance that it's a T19 stock?
The Mahwah plant was from before my time, but it was near the end of Sloatsburg Road where 17 hits the thruway, right? Where the Sheraton and Sharp Plaza are?

re: T18/19 vs NP435
The T18/T19 are both quite durable. You can tell if it is T18 or T19 by PTO covers on the side. T19 has PTO covers on both sides, T18 only has one.
I have a NP435 in my pickup and a T18 in the barn I'm going to try and rebuild for it this year (thanks again, Paul!). I prefer the T18, they are easier to float-shift 2-3 and 3-4 than a NP435; I also like reverse being over and up.
That said, I'd love to find either a Clark (DD or OD) or a Spicer 3053 (DD or OD) set up for a FE/FT for my truck.

Every bump F-100 2wd I've owned or seen has had the T-18
The T-18 is lighter duty than a 435.
I have no idea why a T-18 ended up in an F-350. Never seen that before.
They're both pretty tough trannies. My prefference is the 435.
You've got to really try to kill a 435 and I love the way they shift. Nothing else shifts like a tight old 435.

I don't think there is any real world strength difference between the T-18/T-19 and NP435. I've had 435s in 1 tons and T-18s with parking brakes in 2tons and a T19 in an 87 3/4 ton. they are all strong trannys with slightly different gears. I've never broken any. I've worn some out, the T-18 in the 68 shifts like crap and needs a rebuild, but I've never had a failure.
Layedout72, I've never seen a 3speed with a factory floor shift in trucks, only in cars and early broncos.

I think he meant he never saw a 302 with a floor shifting 4-spd transmission (ie, NP435 or T18). I don't think he meant a floor-shift 3 speed.ima71 trucks are older wrote:Layedout72, I've never seen a 3speed with a factory floor shift in trucks, only in cars and early broncos.

Re: re: T18/19 vs NP435
My F350 came with a 352 and the NP435 and the F100 came with a 302 and a 3.03 trans (3 on the tree).MaxKlinger wrote:FLATBEDFORD, your truck came with a T18 and 360 stock? If so, that shot a hole in my theory. LONGBED, what engine/trans combos do you have in your trucks?
Yup, that's it! It actually was right where the Sharp building is. They tore down the old plant to build the new Sharp building. Fords building took up the whole area!! It was absolutly HUGE!MaxKlinger wrote:The Mahwah plant was from before my time, but it was near the end of Sloatsburg Road where 17 hits the thruway, right? Where the Sheraton and Sharp Plaza are?

re: T18/19 vs NP435
FWIW, I mentioned this in a previous post so forgive the repetitiveness, when the NP in my '79 blew I bought a T-18 to replace it. The transmission shop quoted a ridiculous price to rebuild the NP, more then the truck was worth. Even then, this was about 11 or 12 years ago. The transmission shop told me I was better off with the T-18 anyway, that it was a stronger tranny than the NP. Whether that was knowledge or bias speaking I couldn't tell you.

Here's some info:
The Novak Guide to the
Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions
The T18 or T-18 Transmission The T18 is a reknown, heavy-duty truck transmission designed for and used in ½, 3/4 and 1+ ton trucks. The T18 was made by Borg-Warner Gear from 1966 to 1990. They are found in Ford, Jeep and IH trucks. The T18 is the improved successor to the T98.
Features
The T18 is a top loaded, top shifting truck style transmission. The Ford and some Jeep T18s enjoys a very low compound gear at 6.32:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. T19 versions offer a 6.32:1 (IH), 5:1 or 4:1 (Ford) low gear.
The T18 is fully synchronized in the second through fourth gears. All gears are helically cut except first and reverse, which are spur gears. T19s are syncrhonized in all gears and feature all helically cut gears.

The Novak Guide to the
New Process 435 Transmission
The NP435 Transmission The 435 is an excellent, heavy-duty truck transmission designed and used in ½, 3/4 and 1+ ton trucks. It is a well-built transmission and remains easy to locate and generally inexpensive to buy and maintain. The strength, relatively short size and the gearing of the transmission make it a good choice for a variety of situations.
The NP435 was made by New Process Gear from 1964 to 1993. They are found primarily in Ford trucks from 1966 to 1992 and Dodge trucks from 1964 to 1993. They also had limited distribution in GM & Chevrolet trucks from 1968-1972.
