Exactly right. The 9" on my '83 was leaking, so I would carry a quart of diff oil and a ratchet handle in the cab with me. Every few days I'd pull that fill plug and stick my pinky finger in to check the fluid, and add as necessary. By the way, a tiny drop of diff fluid makes a big puddle.Tougholdford: The 9" rear has no drain plug, but it does have a fill plug. IIRC it's on the left (driver's) side of the housing on the drive shaft side and you use a 3/8' ratchet to pull the plug. Fill the same way as you would the tranny.

Layedout72, is it a column shift manual or a floor shift manual? Maybe somebody got confused and told you it was a three speed with granny gear. I see people refer to 4spd automatics as "3spd with overdrive" all the time.

Hey layedout...
I have heard NP435's called 3 speeds before, because 1st (granny gear) is seldom used. Most folks use 2nd gear to start out.
If it is an NP435, it will be a top loader with the shifter coming out of the top. You should be able to remove the hump cover on the inside and see the top of the tranny. If it is an NP435, it will have NP with a circle around it on the top cover. That's a dead give away.

Layedout has a column shifter so it's got to be a 3 speed.

This transmission is a 4-speed, but all of the older manuals fill/drain plugs are fairly similar. If you don't have a drain plug then that's a new one on me, but nothing's impossible.

Looks like I have some leaks there. That's in my '62 F-100 4X4. Parked it due to the rear end seal going out. That was 8 years ago. Where does the time go??

sorry guys, it IS in fact a 3 spped column shift. so whats the deal with the draining procedur? also, on the 9 inch out back, how do I get the front off? I pulled out (i believe) 12, 9/16, nuts off. I am guessing the pinion gear has to come out with it? It won't budge, so I am guessing I am not done removing things. Do I have to take the yoke off some how? any help is good help!

The Ford 9", not one of their better ideas. Not a popular opinion, but I don't like semi-floating axles to begin with and an axle housing with a cover on the front is just dumb. You're going to have to pull the axle shafts to allow the gear assemble to come out with the cover. That's exactly why I've yet to getting around to the leak on the '62's rear, too much hassle for a gasket.

well, I WAS going to pull it apart to just get some new fluid in, but after looking, it looks like its not leaking. I'll leave it! The tranny, needs to be done cuz it DID leak. maybe it was the rear seal though, (what i was told it was) reguardless, I want new fluid in it. The rear should be fine really. Will go get pics now. I hope.

now the only thing I can think of is that the very most bottom bolt that mounts the tail section on to the tranny, is the drain "plug" as well. It's the lowest point I believe....I just didn't want to pull it and need a new gasket for that area, if it even calls for one.

You got me on that one, maybe the old oil has to be pumped out? I remember they used to sell kits so you could pump out old motor oil, like in boat inboard applications, maybe something similar for gear oil? Or put a hose on a turkey baster and use that to suck it out.

All the pictures/diagrams I can find in my chiltons and OEM manuals shows a drain plug right where that round spot is on the very front-bottom of the tranny (on the engine facing end). That's the casting boss for where the plug should be.
Looks like it was never drilled and tapped for a drain, which means one of two things. If the tranny is out of the truck, simply pull the fill plug and turn the tranny on it's side. OR, go to the parts store and buy a suction pump and try to pull it out of the filler plug.

yes the Np-435 is a four speed with first as a compound low you start out in second unless your pulling out a stump or something.
