What else am I missing for tranny upgrade?

Post by mont974x4 »

I have the 390 in my 72

OK I found a c-6 for $800...new at ck performance..will have to order bellhousing too?
I also found a B&M floor shifter for about $100

What do I need to figure on as far as:
xfer case
drive shafts
carb---I have an Edelbrock 600 but it's for the manul so no kickdown
crossmembers

besides the cinsideration for the above did I miss anything?

Thanks folks.

Are you bolting the t-case to the tranny? I am not real hip with the F100, but I believe they work that way.

The drive shaft lengths will change. Looks like you have thought of the obvious stuff.

How about the speedo cable length? You will also need a vac source for the modulator.

The stock x-fer case is mated to the tranny.

Good call! I totally forgot.

Did these trucks come with a c-6 and x-fer case? Should I be able to find cross members etc. in a Junk yard? I think I'll have new driveshafts fabbed up...altho it'll be spendy.

What about a xmsn oil cooler and lines? I suppose I could buy a new one and just mount it in front of the radiator.

Yes, I do believe they came with C6/205 combos. Like I mentioned, I am not real hip on the F100 4x4. I do know that came with T18 or NP435/205 combos.

As far as the cooler, I would definantly go with the external cooler like you mentioned.

The bellhousing on a C6 is integral with the tranny. Make sure you get the correct tranny for your engine.

The 4x4 C/6 will have the 4x4 specific rear shaft. I am pretty sure they never put one in an F-100 with the small T-case although there may have been a few in 73-74. You best bet will be to find the 205 T-case from an F-150, ot even a 208 from the 80s. The 208 is an aluminum case and much lighter. They probably aren't as tough as a 205 but I haven't seen any problems with them in normal use and they are probably easier to find.

Now I might be wrong but I don't think ford put the dana 21 behind the C6 in the 1973-1979 ..All the 4 speed trucks up to about 1976 had the dana 21 then the NP 205 ..which kinda stinks but the 21 is a stout case when used in light duty application's ..All the 4x F100 trucks I have seen which have the c6 auto had the NP205
I think you will have better luck looking for a parts truck that way you can pull the cross member and drive shafts ...
