Might as well get the 4 speed now since that is the direction you are heading in the future.

If I get a 4spd now with the 302 and I up it to a big block, say, a 390, it'll need a bell housing change, won't it?

The 4speed and the 3speed have the same bolt paturn (Toploader) so if you are going to go to a 4speed you may as well do it now.

If you cange the engine to a BB then you will have to use a bell that matches the engine. The 302 bell will only work on 289/302/351W blocks

Not a toploader. Levers are on the side. Am I wrong about the trans?

Toploader refers to the Plate on Top where you would "Load" the guts. Some have levers on the side, some have the shifter on top. Both are Toploaders. they had the same bolt patern to the bell.

My apologies. I thought toploader, specifically, meant you could install a shifter in the top of it, replacing the cover. I'm told this can't be done if it has side levers. True?

Forgive my ignorance. I'm an OK parts replacement guy but the technical aspects are a bit above me, for now.

Transmissions come in all shapes and sizes. The end the transmission loads from is a big help determining which model you're working on. There are top load, side load, bottom load and most newer transmissions are front or center loading with preloaded tapered bearings to make assembly even funner!

That's why your NP435 costs $450 to build and your ZF 6 speed runs you $2000. The guy doing the work needs to know his sh*t.

You're far better off just swapping a 4 speed. an NP435 will last you forever under the toughest conditions as long as you know how not to abuse it. You eliminate the column shifter junk that wears out and costs a lot to fix and get an extra gear to play with.

I would suggest a 351W stroked to 393 and a ZF5 speed with a GT40 Fuel injection.

Good gas mileage, good performance, and an OD.
