axle blues

Post by 19674x4 »

i finally got my rear axle back. well not my axle but a axle. While building my axle, the guy ran into some problems. When going from a 4 ratio gear to a 3 :drive: :woohoo:  :burp: :pop: :P ratio gear, you have to cange the carrier and in my case, the posi. whell since its the older type it has course splines and not fine splines and the side gears for the axles would not fit the 3.73 carrier. so he gave me a complete 76' 4.10 housing and everything to bolt up and see if i like those gears. Since it is a 76 it is actually 3 inches wider than the 67 but you can barelly notice it. igot it loosly hung last night and all i have to do it tighten every thing down and hook up the brakes, then we'll go for a test drive. And if i like the gears, he will just let me keep that axle and when he gets the parts for mine and puts it together he'll give me that axle and my old 4.56's gears back so i can sel lthem or use them as trading material.

I'd grab my parts and run far, far away from any gear shop claiming to know what they're doing and not knowing in advance what the dana 60 carrier breaks are and that most every old Ford 60 is 16 spline.

Good you got the axle out of the deal, but sure this guy knows what he's doing? Also, you can put 4.10's on your old 4.56 dana 60 posi carrier. You just have to buy special gears for it.

Oh believe me, he knows what he's doing. Jobe's Hot Rod Shop in oakland. We werent sure when the splines changed, if it was before or after 67, plus we didn't even know if it was the origional axle or not. if he had the parts on hand, he could have done it, but we have to scrounge them up. plus the 3.73 carrier that he has is fine splined and not course splined

This guy is probably the only person i would have work on my truck in the area, everyone else is clueless.

I did a 72 trash lock came w/ 31 spline side gears, had 16 spline axles got correct side gears form Dana distributor and put them in no problem. I don't see what the difficulty is.
I your going to be selling that 4.56 trac lock I might be interested.
