THE Ford TOD Swap with some PICS
Hey all. Finnaly things are settled down a bit and I've gone back to fiddling with the trucks. I'd been posting about the Ford TOD and how it's a great trans and finally got just enough info and pics to start a thread.
The Ford TOD was only produced by Ford for Ford. It's basically a street driven light duty every day trans. No granny gears. I fit's well in the same location as the 3.03's (three on the colmn) but may have a much long tail shaft. My SWB was a Direct swap-but it came with a one peice driveshaft and a 3spd with an incledibly long tail. The 69 LWB however came the the short stuby tail shaft 3 spd. Anyway I measured from the center of one u-joint to the next u joint and found the 67 SWB shaft need to be 55.5 inches. The LWB was measured from the center of the first u-joint to to the center of the carrier bearing and came up to be a short 21 inches. The other thing I found sas that the TOD required the use of a C-4 Trans slip yoke because the stock that came with the TOD was too wide and would'nt accept the 67/69's u-joints.
Here's PICS
Gunea Pigs!
the 69's 21 inch shaft and C-4 slip yoke
TOD in the 69, note the long tail housing
TOD up to the FE bell
69's 21 inch shaft
67's one peice shaft, the red thing is the Autometer speed sensor
Overalll these are great transmissions. I can cruise the 69 at 80 mph and still be at 2500 rpm's with 3.50 gears and stock tires. These transmissions can be hard to find. So far it's an 82-86 F-150 find. They all came behind the 300 six. Ask questions.

Is that an autobox? What makes if able to cruise at 2500 at 80mph? Overdrive or 4th gear?
Sorry, don't know much about the diff trannies yet.
Thanks

Didn't know how good 2500 was at 80mph until I drove to Orlando today. I hit 2500rpm at 63mph in the 3 spd FMX with 3.25 rear!

re: THE Ford TOD Swap with some PICS
I had a 85 F150 with this tranny behind a 300-6. Not what you wanted to pull a boat or anything very heavy, but it suited my 16 year old self fine for daily driving. I drove it till I was 20 thaen my dad drove it 5 more years at least. I think it would be a great option in a bump behind a 300 or a small block. Especially if it went behind a 300 with EFI.

How does it compare to a srod? gearing and durablity?
Nice rides.
bob
PS
Is that a conversion unit for the speedo? I have an SROD and need to convert electric speed to manual for my 65.

May be the same tranny, the SROD's I remember were toploader guts in internally shifted case. Fourth was overdrive and there was a big RPM gap between second and third. Put one in a '66 mustang (direct swap for the toploader that was there) with 4.10's and it made it a cool street car back in the day. Personally I'd sabe up and get a 3550 or TKO setup. It's stronger, has better gearing (five speed) and still fits well.
Oh yeah, our SROD came out of 80's van with a 300
