Noticeable difference?

Post by 69rangerman »

Just wondering if I'd noticed much of a difference between the 3.25 gear currently in my ford 9" verses going to a 3.50 or 3.73?

I've got the 306 humming now and it's a jet above 20mph but I'd like a little more pull from a stop.

Not dragging, not pulling, mostly city miles.

Thanks

I Have a Ford TOD trans in both trucks, same size tires and such. I notice a difference between my 3.73 and 3.50 gears. I would rather have the 3.73 for general driving around, and light hauling/towing.

3.25 to 3.50 would be a 7.7% reduction. So 2000 RPM would become 2154 RPM.

3.25 to 3.70 would be a 13.85% reduction. So 2000 RPM would become 2277 RPM.

With the 3.70 you will notice a lot, probable mostly in the pocket book (gas $$).

The 3.50 I think would be a good comprimise.

Definitely a noticeable difference, especially going from 3.25 to a 3.73. I went from a 3.25 to a 3.50 and noticed quite the difference in acceleration, especially on the bottom end. Don't need to rev it as much as you let the clutch out to keep it from bogging, and off the line acceleration is improved a lot.

If you're seeking mileage, stick with the lower numbers. If you're looking for a little more excitement, bump it to the 3.50. You can tow with the 3.50's, but I wouldn't try hauling frequently heavy loads with them. Just remember the higher the number of rear gear, the higher the RPM's to sustain the same speed. I use to cruise 60mph at about 2400 with the 3.25's, with the 3.50's it's closer to 2700RPM.

Thanks guys. Since it's finally back on the road for DD status I don't want to open anything I don't have to back up, but wanted to know for later.

I appreciate the advice.
