Torque Converter

Post by John C »

Anyone got any advice on torque converters? I have a 351/C6 and the transmission is about to get a rebuild, I was thinking of putting a shift kit in for positive shifts and lower transmission temps. I have no idea what this 351/C6 came out of as my bumpside is of mixed parentage, it was originlally a 302/manual. I am not really looking for performance I can get in enough trouble with the 351, it will be a daily driver with an eye to economy, (but with class).

Is a low stall converter the way to go, if so what stall speed, 1500? Also is there a lock up option available and is this a good idea. Where do I look to buy these, there is next to nothing available in Australia.

Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

John.

Hi John,
If your motor is stock with stock cam and for daily driving and economy, you'll want to keep the stock "low stall" converter... The converter is the main cause as to why automatics get worse mileage then standards because of the stall... The higher stall also generates more heat in the transmission... If you’re going to modify your engine then a higher stall from stock might be needed...
They don't make a lock-up converter for the C6 transmission... If your 351 is a 351W you can get an AOD transmission for it, it will have a lock-up converter and overdrive! The great thing about them is that they don't have any electronics to operate them.
I know a guy here in town that does custom and stock converters http://www.torqueconverterworks.com/ he could answer a lot of your questions in better detail...

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
