Post by CERNAK »

What transmission options do i have. want to convert to standard, I am running a 390 FE engine in a big truck, 1970 F600. I also want to keep the driveline brake on it.
Any help sure would be appreciated. :D :fr: :D

Most likely a C6, if it's an automatic.
The C4's were never offered behind a 390.

An F-600 should have an allison behind an FE. You can convert to any manual you can find the correct bellhousing for. 435's and clark 5 speeds are very common in the bigger trucks.

Your truck likely has an Allison AT540 or AT545 trans now. They are both 4 speed autos. Are you sure the engine is a 390? An F600 would have had an FT ( truckized FE) originally. Most likely a 330 or 361. An NP435 will work and they were built with trans mounted parking brakes. A better choice for most applications though would be a 282 or 285 Clark 5 speed. The difference between them is ratios in the lower gears.Be careful with the 285 trans as there was also a 285V. These were often refered to as a "short 4th" transmission. They were designed to be used with a 2 speed rear axle. The combination of trans and axle ratios resulted in a Ford only shifting sequence. It worked well but if you drove different makes of trucks with a 5 speed trans and 2 speed rear you always had to remember what you were driving. If you forgot the grinding noises reminded you.Hope this helps.

THANKS GUYS, JUST DECIDED TO KEEP THE C-6 AND CHANGE THE RING AND PINION. IT DOES HAVE THE FE 390, JUST PUT ONE IN. SOMEONE CONVERTED TO THAT ENGINE SOME TIME AGO. NOW I GOT 2 390'S, ONE CAR ENGINE, AND ONE INDUSTRIAL.
IT HAS 6.80 GEAR RATIO, NEED MORE TOP SPEED SO I'M LOOKING FOR 5.29'S OR BETTER.
ANYONE HAVE A SET, OR THE WHOLE THIRD MEMBER?
IT IS A "ROCKWELL STANDARD" DIFF. MODEL # F106
WITH CASTING # 5200 D394 19 SPLINE AXLES.

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE ADVICE.

Start hitting the salvage yards. Rockwell ( now Meritor) rears are common and easy to build.
