6-speed Manual too much$ or worth the hassle?

Post by gmcjimmy88 »

I am almost certain I will go to a manual transmission after the body work is done and I start on the drivetrain. My questions is I know there are many different 5-speeds that can be used fairly easily, is there any 6-speeds that fits as well? I realize a 6-speed is alot more money if it is feasable but I think if one could be foud it could be worth it. Anyone know of somebody using one? Unless I stumble upon one at a great price I will most likely end up with a 5-speed. Thanks for the assistance.

My bad, I guess that would help. 360(ish). Currently it has an automatic and a spare three speed if all else fails.

i have a 6 speed but i have a stroke 351w. i know they have them for 460 but fe i am not sure. ddperformance is where i got mine. i sprung for the dodge viper spec one but the was around a grand more. i think there about 1900 for a standard one. thats about 400 more then a good 5 speed.

Are you talking truck 6 speed or car six speed? I imagine one from a Dodge or Chevy pickup could be adapted with some doing but would be expensive. I drove my brothers Duramax 6 speed and noticed it had a super low 1st that you don't really use anyways. Now even though it has double overdrive, the same results could be had with a 5 speed and the proper rear gearing.
I don't know jack about the car ones but I think they are double overdrive too.
I knew a guy with one behind a 500 caddy in a model A with a 3.00 gear. Theoretically it could go 256 mph.

The truck 6 speeds are 1:1 5th, the cars are double overdrive. You cannot bolt a diesel 6 speed to a 460, you can bolt an S5-42 ZF to a 460 though.

You can't bolt anything with an integral bell to an FE. The A6-650 ZF 6 speed ford uses is a pretty decent tranny (rated for 650 lb/ft), but it won't fit any older truck. They are 3-4" taller than older transmissions.

a gear vender unit would likely be a bit better, easer if you could find one at a good price. depending on how much you use your truck it would pay for its self in about a year or two. :2cents:
