dana rearend?

i have a '72 F250. its supposedly a camper special chassis. ive been told that i have a dana rearend. i dont know much about danas or what they really look like but i know that its not a 9". does anyone know which dana i might have? and id like to make it a posi rearend but idk where to get parts for that? probly have to get them from dana?

It should be a full float dana 60. I have one in a 69 f350 camper special I assume to be original. It has a 3.73 limited slip. It has coarse spline axles I believe 16 spline.

I have the same rear in a 72 with 3.54 open.


Randy's Rind and Pinion or DTS etc. will have parts for the differential.

As far as I know all of the F250 bumps used Dana 60 rears. It should have a rear cover that is retained by 10 bolts ( I just went out and crawled under my E250 to count them).There are lots of vendors who can supply parts.Dana supplied 60 axles to others such Dodge, Jeep and IHC for decades.There should be a tag under one of the cover bolts.I'd suggest having the info from it handy when looking for parts as there were some minor changes thru the years.Hope this helps.

Page 102 in the LMC catalog for the bumps will kinda give you a clue where to look for #'s but as the guys above said it is more than likely a D60 unless someone has messed with it. 60 will be on one of the chunk ears. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fb/0102.asp

Look at the axle code on the Vin tag and it will tell you what axle you have. All 250s got a D60 and all 350s Got a D70 whether dually or not.

I'd go right to the part to make sure what you have after lookin at the tags. 1 ppl change parts out all the time due to necessity #2 Doors are changed out easily and may not be the original tags. Sheesh my crew came with f100 tags due to the door being changed out, so double check what you have with your hands on it.

Like mentioned it should have about 10 bolts around the back side holding the cover on. If I recall correctly, there should be a STAMP somewhere on the axle that denotes what it is, probably near the center section? Maybe that only holds true for 4x4 front axles assemblies?

Summit should have units for that. Pricey too! If you are only changing the carrier, you could do that in the driveway with simple tools. Check backlash before pulling it apart and then set it back up the same. You don't even have to jack it up and take the tires off!!

This is what you should be looking at minus the cheezy chrome cover.

here is where the tag should be located if it still has one, left or right side(I've found them on both so not sure which side it's on from factory).


60 is stamped on the lower ear between the cover and the tube and an axle # is on the top ear.

The ratio is on the tube to the right of your finger. At least the one it came with.
