Finduing Grease/oil i the right rear drum Q?

Post by rjewkes »

does this absolutely mean a dead wheel bearing? I cant move the axle much more than the usual give. Or does this just mean a bad seal or could it have been repaired and put back all greasy?

its mostly grimy/sludgy crusty stuff. No sign of leak where the axle meets the backing plate or anything the suff that looks wet looks to just be dripping from the sludge as it gets heated maybe?

Axle seals can be swapped out. Gotta pull the axle.

Even a tiny leak will look huge once things heat up and get slung around inside the drum.

If you're just finding gear oil then a new seal is all you need. If you have excess axle free play then change that bearing before you lose that axle.

If you got a cuttoff wheel cut the race off. Then notch the inner race
and collar. Split with a big chisel and they fall right off. I use a piece
of chainlink fence pipe to drive the bearing and collar back on. Used
to do it on a press, but it's just easier this way. I never press bearings
off anymore. Thank God for cuttoff wheels. Be carefull putting the axle
back in, as it's easy to knock the garter spring off the new seal.

Good luck, KeithP :)

Good news it turns out the last owner literraly greased up the brakes with the bearing grease used for the front hubs and also he had the shoes on backwards short on back tall on front.
