my first c6 problem

Post by 70FIRSTFORD »

installed c6 in my 70 f100 rebuilt with new converter dont have auto shifter yet. filled with 25 pints of fluid seems no matter where shift linkage is set it still wants to to move truck forward. is park all the way towards back of truck or forward? second why does it want to keep moveing forward? does the kick down lever need to be held up in place or if it aint hooked up does it just float? be easy im new . thanks

sounds like an internal problem. park is forward. 1st is back. If you move the selector all the way forward and can move the truck by pushing it then the linkage is not right inside the trans. If you put it into park and can't push it but start it and it tries to go forward in park then somthing is wrong inside. The ford manual says to set the linkage up you must shift the trans into first and then set the selector on the colum to 1st and tighten up everything. centering any play in the linkage.

Hey RTG
Here's a stupid question but here goes(my in-box is about empty anyway)
Describing the adjustment above when refering to 1st. You refering to low1 correct . P-R-N-D-2-1. And does the same principal apply for the FMX(go easy :D )

You can find out by taking the pan off and looking up next to the drum. The selector comes through the case and locks into the shift rod. If it wasn't installed correctly it will be stuck in one gear. If you can drive it see if it shifts. If it does then above maybe your issue. If it doesn't shift then its stuck in 1st or the valve body has an issue. Maybe just needs a fluid change. Does it rev freely in park or does it feel like it has a load on it.

Yep, sounds like a bad tranny to me. I had something very similar happen to me years ago. I had a '68 Ford XL fastback, and did a very hard Reverse/Drive drop...and the tranny immediately started screaming (very high-pitched whine). I stopped and put it into Park, but it still tried to go forward. Turns out that it was stuck in a forward gear, and the car tried to go forward in every gear selection (including Reverse and Neutral).

... and since I'd pulled up to the curb, in order to limp the car home I had to drive forward up over the sidewalk and back out into the street. Ended up just replacing the transmission.

I have a 77 f250 that was shortened down to a short bed with 60s and 39.5 boggers. It had a bad habit of welding the low reverse clutch pack together. Once it happened it would go forward in every gear and never would shift out of 1st. swapped it out this winter for an np435 and divorced 205. This way I only have one clutch to replace.

It's a real shame that a c-6 for a small block wont work on a 400m I've got one I bought out of a '90 passenger van that was running when it was hit ,I bought to go behind the 302. I've got less than $100.00 invested and I'm in Dfw
