Transmission and wheels

Post by Fancy »

I've got a 68 short wide f-100 2WD with a 300 six and a 3 speed on the floor. I've found a 351 out of a 75 torino that's been gone through and ready to install. I would like to go with a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission but not sure what years etc would work. I don't want a 4 speed with a granny gear, i'd like all 4 gears to be functional....by that i mean i don't plan on pulling a load, just burning rubber with a high enough 4th gear to get "decent" gas mileage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, i'd like to use 15X8 rims with baby moons. I'd use the factory but i can't find any ford truck rims wider than 15x7. Any suggestions here?

Thanks for your help.

top loader 4spds seem to be the way to go, but they are pricey. do a search on top loaders it was discussed earlier and there were a few good links in the threads i believe. i imagine you could use a t-5 as well.
as for the wheels. i ran a set of american racing chrome reverse smoothies that were 15x8 and they looked good, but i would go with a 7 in front with an 8 in back to get the wheels to look right in the wells, or an 8 in front and 10 in the rear with the stock backspacing. if you've noticed, the fronts track wider than the rears from the factory and after you notice it, it kinda bugs ya-at least it does me.

The T-5 is only good for 300 ft-lbs of torque, so (theoreticaly) it would work behind your 300 but NOT a 351.

I am going to be trying to put a T-5 behind my 300 in the comming months.

All 3 and 4 speed Trannys are 1:1 in final drive so it realy is just about how far you want to rev your engine and how many times you want to shift.
