4 Speed Tranny is dead....I need quick advice!!!
Guys. My 4 Speed in my 72 F100 just locked up on me. Barely will go into gear and when it does it screams like a firecracker on the 4th of July.
Several people that have looked at it tell me the transmission is gone. Ok. So, knowing that I have to replace it (and don't have much money to spend), I need to know what range of tranny's out of what cars I can get that will basically be a bolt on for my truck.

Which tranny do you have, the T-18 or the NP-435?

The truck 4spd's don't usually just come unglued. If it's a T18 or 435
pull the top cover off and look inside. You can do it while it's still in the
truck. Maybee a shift fork broke.

Any Ford truck 435, T-18 or T-19 from a highboy or 2wd will be a direct bolt in for your truck. Year ranges of mid 60's through 87 or so.
It takes a ton of abuse or way too much power going through it to kill a truck 4 speed. No matter what's wrong with it if you're not affraid to tear into it you can probably get it back on the road for under $50.

I'd take a long hard look at the clutch and throwout bearing first, the transmission doesn't usually make that sound.

How does the clutch feel when you step on the pedal?
Nothing looks immediately out of place inside the tranny, but I'm far from an expert with them.

Look here. read up. http://www.fordification.com/images/dow ... ebuild.pdf
That's the synchro. The throwout bearing is inside the bellhousing. If
theres no pieces or debris in the bottom of the trans. it's probably not
the trans. The synchro's all have movement in them.
Pull the tin cover off the bottom of the bellhousing. See if anything
falls out. Look up in there with a light.

Umm.. yes.... no gear oil in a transmission is a VERY BAD thing.
