cleaning gunk/dirt off tranny

Is it safe to spray down a transmission with water and all if not sealed up against the motor? I need to clean it off, and paint it so that I can throw the motor back in the truck. My dad needs the garage for the new riding lawn mower once it gets here and I don't want to short cut the truck either.

Would it be safe to do this or not? I was thinking I could use some purple power + pressure washer + knotted wire wheel. Anyone else have opinions on this?

IF it is a manuel id say its fine and if its an automatic just dont hit inside the bellhousing to hard!

I just used carb cleaner on the inside of the bellhousing and wiped it down with shop rags. Outside mine was Georgia clay and I had to soak it in carb cleaner and then use (no kidding) a chisel, putty knife, and steel brush! Hope yours is regular dirt.

I believe its just dirt, but will be getting some carb cleaner, wire brushes, and whatever else I can think of to take to it I guess.

I wish I could just have the thing baked or dipped!

there is no problem washing of autos trans. if the converter is in all the way and locked in with wire. also make sure you block off the vent, dip stick, and rear seal. I pressure wash every trans and if I think I got water in it I let it sit for a hour or two then drop the pan.

I brought mine to a place and for 100.00 they made the whole under side and engine sparkle. They used a high pressure steam cleaner. I've tried all those cleaners such as gunk and there was no comparison as to what this guy did and it took him about and hour and a half. Its the first time I seen it the clean since Pops bought it new in 69.

Follow the cations about not directing the spray at the seals.

I didn't need the wire brush, used Super Clean, Simple Green, pressure washer and a wheel brush.

When i clean transmissions here at work on the tear down bench, i soak them with berrymans b12 and let then sit over night. I know that stuff dissolves pretty quick, but it stills seems to do good letting it sit. Sometimes if there nasty i will wire brush them. Then i spray it all off with brake clean. But thats easier here because we dont pay for any of that stuff. Its shop supplied. And we have a 55 gallon drum of brake clean that goes into refillable sprayers. Doing it that way could probably get expensive if you had to buy all that crap.
