pinion angle...

Post by ezernut9mm »

do i need to know the stock pinion angle to get the correct shims for the rear? like an idiot i didn't measure mine before i dropped it and now i need to shim it because i have a vibration. this is the first truck i've dropped where this was an issue and i really need a good starting point. any ideas?

Well I've not tried to drive mine as of yet and I was supposed to have a drive line guy come buy and help me figure mine out , but so far he's a no show .I've been looking at this site and have not gotten around to doing the actual measuring , but I'll share.

There are several links here on this site as well . I'm just muttling thur them and I've sent them to a friend who is looking at them as well and maybe between the two of us we can come up with some thing.

No, you don't need to know what it was, only what it is now. Just get an angle finder and measure the angle at transmission yoke, and then compare that to the pinion...adjust the pinion angle match the tranmission yoke.

does it matter that it's a two piece drive shaft?

No, AFAIK in your case it won't make a difference. As long as the engine/tranny centerline and the pinion centerline are on the same plane with each other, you'll be just fine.

okay, so the best i can come up with is

trans=2 deg
ds out of trans=4 deg
so, i'm good there,

ds into rear=3 deg
rear=19 deg
which is a 16 degree difference. so do i need 14 degrees of shim to come within the 2 deg of the tranny to ds? is this right thinking?

Hmmm, I don't think you're measuring that quite right. I wouldn't think the pinion would be off by any more than 8-10 degrees max, probably close to 6. What kind of angle finder did you use to measure with, and where did you place the angle finder? It should go right against the pinion yoke, where the U-joint would rest.

i'm going to drop the ds this weekend to get completely accurate readings off the yokes, but real quick tonight i used a magnetic angle finder-like used for roofing. i know the ds numbers are solid because i took those readings easy enough by placing the finder right on the underside of the ds, but the tranny i wasnt to sure of. on the rear, i took the reading off the the underside of the pumkin. i know this isn't accurate, i'm more concerned about the math.
2 deg. is acceptable, correct?

i'm trying to get a pic off my camera right now so youcan see where i took the rearend angle reading from.

Yes, 2 degrees is fine.

i know this is not very accurate, but it gives you an idea how far off the pinion angle is.

That's why your measurement was so far off...you're going from the bottom. Definitely retake that measurement from the pinion yoke after you remove the driveshaft and I think you'll find it's not off nearly as far as you think.
