Clutch Recommendations

Post by GMan »

I'm ready to replace the clutch and flywheel in my 68 F100. I have the 390 engine and added a 4bbl carb, intake and low rise headers. Can anyone recommend a good clutch for replacement? Thanks.

Stick to a major brand:

LUK, Borg Warner, Hays, McLeod, CenterForce, Zoom.

Stay away from parts store rebuilds.

I recommend staying far away from Zoom. LUK makes a real quality, affordable clutch.

Centerforce just uses LUK pressure plates painted orange.

i have the borg-warner ones myself, they are a complete kit, and should be done rather than just replacing the disc.
of course being i am on a limited budget i always have good used discs laying around for emergencys.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Thanks for the recommendations. I called Luk and they said that they don't make a clutch for the 69 F100. I'll try the other brands.

Summit Carrys several of those brands. I haven't used a Zoom in a while and I think they were sold, so if someone had a bad experience, scratch them.

Summit

I think LuK's catalog may be off.

Possible part number: 07-027

They list this on:

1969 F100

and

1972 F100

They don't list 390 on either page, but list 360 on the 72 page.

LUK doesn't list any applications prior to 80's or so, however, They make every clutch application out there. You need to talk with an experienced distributor. I use carolina clutch with pretty good results.

I bought the top-dog zoom clutch kit for my 300 six truck in a pinch about 6 months ago and it's a piece of junk. Chatters like mad. Sounds like it's going to fly apart sometimes. Heard from numerous others that they've had similiar and worse experiences with them. Talked with a NAPA store owner who says he's working on getting a different brand of clutch on his shelves other than zoom.
