Dana 70 question.

Hey guys, Maybe Y'all can help me out. I found a 68?69? F-350 parts truck that has a Dana 70 with duals,and was wondering what it and the springs are worth. I am wanting to know what to offer the owner.

depends if it has a locker or not.
last one i bought came attached to a 69 f350 wrecker that i paid $800 for, which is $200 less than a salvage yard wanted for just the axle, no springs.it is a locker and i put it and the springs and the wrecker unit on my highboy.

I paid $100 for this truck, just to take the rear Dana 70 dually for my F-250.

springs probably aren't worth a lot, if the truck has been used they would be sagging. My springs came from another truck that wasn't as abused as the red one.

I'm going to look at this truck this weekend and I will get some pics of it and the whole truck.

23 spline dually ford 70- $100 in good working shape. Springs- $10? 35 spline 70's can be worth a fair bit to the right person. Prices are always relative to your location though.

the 70s are high here due to the fact that you have to take whats available because of the shipping cost of getting one sent here.

I'm not sure what the market is like in san antonio, but in my part of Texas, you can't get a 70 dually rear for less than $500. Hotshotters buy them up like crazy, and pay big bucks for 'em. But it may be different in SA

I guess "hotshotting" means something different where you are than it does where I am. Here, it means a short notice equipment/parts delivery service.

Up here, we have individuals and companies who kind of act as equipment couriers. In the oilfield, sometimes you need a part for your broken equipment right away, and rather than going through the usual channels, one phones a "hotshotter" who picks up the part wherever it is, and drives it out to you in the field.

One of my old neighbours used to do this kind of stuff on his days off, using his personal vehicle. He made several hundred $$ per trip.

Is there a market for such a service where you are?

Hotshotting is doing the job of a kenworth with your pickup truck. Hauling right at the max GVW (and many times above) usually with a 2wd 1 ton dually. Those that I know who do it use cummins powered 2wd duallys.

The thing to realize here is that a 23 spline ford dana 70 is an antique. Nobody hotshots with a 40 year old 360 powered ford dually. You're not going to pull 26K pounds over grades at 60 MPH or stop it on the way down with a rig like that.

The 90's dodge dually dana 80's are the big ticket around these parts. A 12 valve cummins tweaked to pull serious weight every day all day will tear up a dana 70 in short notice. They usually fail when the ring gear bolts shear right off at the carrier.

It just boils down to the 23 spline 70 not being a very desireable axle. 35 spline stuff is tougher and easy to get parts for. The dana 70 has two main types interested in it: Those that want to replace the dually rear for thier tow rig and those 4x4 guys that want a beefy single wheel rear because they're tired of blowing up thier dana 60 or 14 bolt.

both of those versions of hotshotting apply here.

all my stuff is antique. as long as it works right i dont worry too much. the 4x4 wrecker is not going to pull 26K anyway.
