NP435 won't go into gear

Post by 71 LONG BED »

I took my '67 F350 out for it's maiden voyage yesterday! :woohoo:
Only problem was, I had a very hard time getting it into 3rd. I didn't even try 4th because I was on small neighborhood roads. I actually had to stop to get it back into 2nd to get going again. I did manage to get it into 3rd twice.

Any ideas what is going on? 1st, 2nd, and reverse are all fine. 3rd was my only problem.

It ran geat other wise. It pull very well with no hesitation. Lots of smoke until it warmed up though. :P

I took her out again! I was even able to get it into 3rd and 4th. It is just a little tricky. I was apparently reaching to far to the left. :P

I did, however, experience the ever dreaded "death wobble" when I got up over 45 mph. It actually shook the drivers door open!
Obviously, the front tires are in desperate need of a balance. I have a new set of rims (thanks two-bit) and a good set of tires, so I'll be swapping out the old split rims sooner rather than later.

Bent rims and not torquing the lug nuts down to 100 ft lbs will cause a death wobble. In my case I had to completely rebuild the front end to get mine back to normal

I had the opposite problem my 250 has a T18 and the owner had bent the shifter for some reason and I kept trying for the NM435 3 and 4.

Upside down reverse too.

I meant to say, I was reaching too far to the right, not the left.

dont think i ever drove 2 where 3rd gear was in exactly the same spot. only 3rd is the strange thing. nowadays i have the warner in my truck and the wife has the np and reverse is the opposite so it gets me every once in a while.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

When I first got mine I had a real hard time getting into 4th. I have a T18. I think it was mostly operator error on my part too. I get all screwed up when I go from my Focus to my F250, and then to the bump. They all shift a little differently, and one (or two) of them has reverse in the wrong place.

I had an old crew cab (my first) quite a few years ago. replaced the engine and tranny in it as a package. Never seen it in the truck before I bought it.
I was used to the tranny that was in it, and didn't know that there was a different shift pattern to the new tranny. I spent 3 weeks driving it with no floor cover, and the shifter tower held on with 4 bolts (so I could unbolt it real quick and 'shift' into reverse!)

Boy did I feel like a fool when I discovered that I was trying to shift it the wrong way the whole time!
In life many men take the path of righteousness, some take the path many others follow (G.M. owners, for example), some take a more arduous path, some a simpler path. I, sir, took the PSYCO-PATH!!
