help geting pinion nut off

Post by 68f100ranger »

Ok, heres the deal. I blew out my pinion yoke a few months ago and am now getting around to fixing it (now have the parts). In trying to take off the pinion yoke i discovered that i have nothing strong enough to get it off, i have used 2 different impact guns, and tried heating up the nut, but the damn thing wont budge. i would like to get this fixed today because we only have one vehicle right know and its annoying having to share one vehicle. Am i not doing something right? is there a trick to take off a d60 pinion nut? thanks.

Its just really tight. You might need a 10 ft long peice of pipe to put on a breaker bar. Or get an impact with around 1200 ft lbs of torque.
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.

One idea (might work, might not)
put a long breaker bar on it and wedge it against the frame. roll the truck forward and back until it breaks loose. if there is good traction it might work.

:yt:
put the pipe on the passenger side and push the truck forward just a little or get a longer 2" diameter pipe and jump on it.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

I had an axle that had obviously been worked on in the past and whatever genius shop installed the pinion nut mushroomed the end of the pinion and peened the nut so it wouldn't come loose. Hopefully this isn't the case for you. The nut should come right off with a good 1/2" impact. For real stubborn ones I get "Big Bertha" my 48" rigid pipe wrench. Clamp that bugger to the yoke, strap the handle to the frame rail and use a 3/4 drive socket with a 3/4" breaker bar and cheater if necessary.

If you're good with your torch and the old yoke is toast anyway, you can torch the yoke off and cut the nut completely off the pinion without hurting the pinion threads one bit. Use a big tip and cut quickly to keep as much heat out of the pinion as possible.

I had to do that with the mushroomed pinion. I then pulled the pinion out and turned the damaged threads off in my lathe so the new nut would thread on. Alot of work, but easier than installing new gears.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. i finally got it off, after 5 minutes with the torch (just a little hand held propane one) and alot of cursing the impact wrench finally took it off, it barely wanted to move but once it did it came right off. i did try the breaker bar and cheater bar combo but all i could do is get the truck to move. such a good feeling to be able to drive the truck again, i was having classic truck withdrawals. now i can drive down to west coast classic cougar and pickup the parts i need to begin the body work on my cougar. thanks again everyone.
