Dana 60 axle help

Post by Fake Name »

I'm trying to spend some $ by putting a trak-lok in the back of my 70 f250. It's a Dana 60 3.54 gears with 16 spline axles, and they don't make trak-loks for those, so I tried to get a set of 30 spline axles, but I can't find them- anywhere, new or used. They need to be 31-1/4 inches from the inside of the flange.

Anyone know anybody? The truck is on the lift and I may have to have them button it up....

thanks.

ran into that once before myself , ended up taking the locker back out because i could not find the right length axles, the ones from the locker were either too long or something else, cant remember.
i do have a 60 complete outside somewhere its a 3.73 but not sure if its a locker as the tag is gone and i have not removed the cover.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

I have a complete locked-up (factory unit - ?true-trak?) Dana 60 if you are real interested. pulled it from a '71 crew cab and used it under my 4x4 for a couple years until I installed the Dana 70.

Where in CA are you?

EDIT: I just checked the gears and they are 3:73. I have no idea what splines the axles are.

They sure did make 16 spline trac-loks. I've thrown many, many 16 spline trac-loks in the dumpster. I've never seen a trac-lok as an upgrade from an open diff.

You won't find 30 spline axles to fit your bumpside 60 rear. You can put the wider dentside axle under your truck which are common with 30 spline axles.

You can get axles made any lenth you want. Dutchman in Portland does some fine work. It will cost ya around $300 for Yukons.

I have a set of 16 spline axle shafts at home. They are the old style with the cone washers. I can measure them if you are interested in them.

What happend to the shafts that were in it? They should work just fine.

I chucked my Trac-loc also. Went with a Power-loc. I am kinda old school that way.

Oh crap sorry, Its late and I am getting sleepy. Talk to 72hiboy4x4.

If you go with 30 spliners then you will have to get them custom cut to fit your housing. You won't find much for the 16 spliners new, so your best bet would be to look for a used 16 spline reareand or just upgrade to a 30 spline.

Thus the problem. Looks like the only way out is to have custom 30s made. Ouch$.

Please tell this n00b: why power-lok over trak-lok?

thanks.

Nope, tried that as well. No 30 spline axles anywhere. Called out the the wrecking yards, etc. I'm open to suggestion, but the gear shop has exhausted all their resources as well. I suspect I could start throwing the big bucks for some custom setup, but it's probably not feasible for an older truck used to haul house junk and the dirt bike.

But I'm open to suggestions...

Not sure, but I have heard you can change out side gears from a 30 spline to a 16 spline

Do some asking on switching side gears. That might be your best bet if you can get ahold of a 30 spline carrier. Ebay the 30 spline side gears.

let us know what you find.

[quote="heep70"]16 spline power-loc

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/dana-spi ... dZViewItem

This link is a trak-lok, so back to the power/trak controversy. Would I be making a mistake using a trak-loc? Should I try to hold out and find a power-loc? I'm not rock-crawling the beast, just don't want to get stuck in the desert....

thanks again, you've been very helpful. And patient.

you, no doubt, have more experience than I. that typed, I'd be happy to have a powerlok if I could find one. While this truck is still on the lift with the rear end apart. I'll add that while we all agree the powerlok is superior, you are the only person in my research that has dissed the traklok for my light duty use. Heck, I can get a Detroit Locker tomorrow if I was worried about breaking the truck. And trust me, looking on craigslist and the rest of the internet are well within my expertise. Thanks for the input, and if you have a rebuildable 16 spline powerlok, I'd be happy to buy it!
