clutch noise?

Post by montana_hiboy »

my truck sat for a month and when i took her out today i noticed a noise coming from the clutch (i think) when the clutch is disengaged no noise is evident but when the clutch is engaged i hear a low pitched growling or grinding type noise, it's present in all gears, at all speeds.....any ideas, thanks

time to crawl underneath and remove the cover and have a look inside the bell.
sounds like the throwout bearing lost its lube, or is rubbing on the pressure plate.
possible the clutch needs adjustment, especially if the cab mounts are rusted and sagging.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

the throw out bearing would only make noise when clutch is disengaged, this makes noise when clutch is engaged

if the bearings are dry it might do it either way.

I was waiting for an answer on this one as I was thinking the same thing. However, if the clutch is out of adjustment, the throwout bearing could be making contact with the pressure plate fingers and spinning. Or I guess your input shaft in the tranny could be going. What have you found out thus far?

tranny fluid level checks out ok, i have'nt had a chance to take a look inside yet but i drove her over the weekend and the noise has going from be a constant noise to more of an intermittent noise, ill have a chance to take a closer look tommorrow though, i know it's kinda far fetched but i'm just hoping it's due to the truck sitting for a month in single degree temps and the niose just goes away with time......

Sounds like it might stop. It has been cold and with it sitting that could have gummed up the grease in the throw out bearing. After it "recurculates" around the bearings you might be ok. Just a thought.

well to update, as of monday the noise has completely vanished, and hopefully stays that way, these trucks are like a trusty 'ol mule, they like to be worked, they just don't like sitting around too long i guess
