Clutch Replacement

Post by GMan »

I'm going to replace the clutch in my 68 F-100 in the very near future. As I am new to all of this, I must plan well in advance. Are there any little details not normally seen that I should be aware of before digging in?

Also, the engine in the truck is a 390. A friend and I added low riser heads, an Autolite 4bl carb and the 4bl intake manifold. Should there be any special considerations when deciding on the replacement clutch?

I'm going to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearings. Thanks.

its a simple job from what i have done. the only thing i know that you will want to do is use a line up tool to center the disc in the pressure plate. also dont forget to replace your piolt bushing in the end of the crank.

LUK makes the best I've seen these days. They're pretty affordable as well. Try carolina clutch on the internet. Many will say centerforce, but LUK actually makes the pressure plates for centerforce's higher end clutches.

dont forget to check out how bad your flywheel is worn, if its got a bad groove in it it needs pulled down and recut, infact the clutch jobs i've been on in md/hd trucks we always got the flywheel cut. Also while its out look to see if the rear seal is leaking, not a bad time to fix it while everything is out, if its not leaking i advise leaving it alone. other than that its not to bad, better if you have 2 people imo.
