'72 right-side spindle / grease fitting?

Post by Nausea »

New user - been lurking awhile. This is an awesome forum!
Was hoping somebody could tell me if anybody still makes or supplies front spindles for 70-72 F250 with factory disc brakes?
Alternately, it could reworked with a newer kingpin (?). But here's the deal - upon doing the 1st lube (just acquired the truck), I discovered that the bottom grease fitting is completely missing from that spindle. In fact, the screw in plug that is home to the fitting (covers bottom of kingpin) is gone and has been for quite some time judging from the caked-up gunge on the threads. When I was changing the pads, I was able to rock the whole spindle - so its definitely worn. I lubed it the best I could without pulling the spindle and of course at the time, I had no idea it'd be such a coveted part :)
I've looked at different online supplies, but no love so far.
Does anyone know if perhaps a later year part would fit? Are there different kingpin sizes, etc? Is the grease fitting 'plate' available somewhere?
Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

Aha! I just noticed that it was '75 when the kingpin size changed... so I guess I'm off the scrounge the salvage yards.

you can probably just put new king pins in and when your there clean up the zirt threads and install a new zirt. the zirts come in different sizes if you have to tap the threads out larger. getting a junkyard front end may just put you right back where you started.

Read the following link for more info on kingpin sizes:

http://www.fordification.com/discbrakes01.htm

You might not need to replace the spindle, it could possibly just be a very worn kingpin bushing. However, if the bushing has worn through and the kingpin started wearing on the spindle itself, then yes, it'll need replaced, and you'll have to find one in a junkyard (or through a member here), as these aren't being reproduced.

One of our members (Roman aka swissranger) actually manufactured his own spindle repair parts. Here's a couple of photos (I don't think he would mind that I am posting them). He wrote up an in-depth tutorial on the whole process if anyone is interested. He lives in Switzerland so doesn't have that easy access to parts that most of us are accustomed to.

So that setup would be used instead of the regular pins and bushings right?
