looking for info on tranny swap 3 spd to C6

Post by 72ranger »

from a 3 on the tree to a C-6, my motor is a 390, with a 9inch rear with 3.50 open rear gears, i like the three speed, but its not very commuter friendly in traffic, creeping along between 2- 40 mph. i found a C6 that was mounted to a 390 incl bellhousing and torque converter for $100.

how hard is it to do?
what else will i need to buy?
i dont have to change steering columns do i?
cant i just disconnect the 3spd column shifter?
i want a automatic floor shifter, i can weld up a higher tranny hump box to mount it to right?
any other info would be help full.
thanks

you will need a shorter driveshaft . yes you can disconnect your column and keep using it since you are going with a floorshifter. the spedo cable is different by being longer. make sure the tail shaft is a short tail shaft with half of a yoke bolted onto it or you will have to get a complete new drive shaft end for your shorter driveshaft. i think the mounts and crossmember are the same. you will aslo ned a flex plate to bolt the torque converter to.i cant remember the floor hump height thing but you may have to addres that too. but yes you can put in a floor shifter if you want.

good combination, just remember that the general concensus is that the C-6 eats about 10% of your HP. So your mileage might not go up to far. Sure is easier to drive in traffic, tho!
