Rear End Leaking

Post by cghstrojan08 »

I have the Ford rear end and it is leaking fluid. The front plate (whatever it is called) is leaking. Is it the o ring? What is the easiest way to change it? Also, how hard is it to change the carrier housing gasket or whatever thats called? Thanks!

so its leaking around the yoke? if so you have to unbolt the drive shaft remove the yoke from the splines of the rear end remove the seal put a new seal back in check the yoke for grooves or other wear put a good yoke back on and put the driveshaft back on.

It isn't around the yoke. It is the 5 bolt plate. I don't know what it's called.

i think theres a gasket in there. if you take out those five bolts i think you can pull the whole pinion out and replace the gasket.

Your going to want to take of the yoke with an impact wrench after you pull the drive shaft off. Then you replace and seal with new gasket and tighten up. I am not sure if the fluid will pour right out so watch out or you might as well prepair for a differential oil change also. Good Luck

Ewwww, anal seapage! If your housing to differential gasket is leaking, you have to remove the axles first and then all the nuts around the differential.

ford 9 differential refill

Post by BigRedTruck »

I got this fliud tranfer pump thingie out at sears that I was going to use to put new fluid in. The refill nut/bolt has a recessed design on it like it might be hex drive or something. It could just be filled with grime though. Any idea what size and type it is?

3/8 inch square drive. A 6 inch extension on a 3/8ths drive ratchet works great for pulling that plug, but you want the area clean before you pull it out, so you don't get dirt inside.

You MIGHT need a breaker bar, or at the least a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, with a 1/2-to-3/8 adapter to break it loose the first time, if it hasn't been cracked loose in a long time.

i thought it was 1/2 inch. but its been a while since i refilled mine. so i could be wrong. it one of the two sizes. i used just a ratchet and a extension. and mine was tight.

Make sure the vent tube isn't clogged. If its clogged, the pressure could push the oil through an otherwise good gasket.

theres vents in the transfer case and manual trans too and of course the front axle of a 4x4.
ever wonder why those items seem to be covered with oil when you first buy them?
