Auto trans- what to do?

Post by 46stude »

I'm curious as to what you guys think I need to do-

I'm picking up an '82 F250 tomorrow thats been sitting about 5 yrs. I'll change the oil, flush the cooling system, bleed the brakes, & clean the fuel tank & lines.

But I'm not much of an auto trans guy, & this thing has a C6. It ran when parked. Should I drain the fluid & change the filter before firing it up? Or will I be better off leaving the trans alone? I hear alot of stories of auto's keeling over after a fluid change, & I have no interest in rebuilding this thing as it'll be a temporary driver 'til I get my '69 F350 roadworthy.

Comments or opinions?

Do nothing to it. I bought a '72 that sat for 13 years. The C6 worked like a champ.

yea you'll probably be alright. its the newer eaods that you have to watch. they require a more ridgid schedule of matainence than the older trannies do.

If you have an AOD with 350k on it and never been serviced, don't do it now!

I second that. When the AOD came out We at Ford call it A4OD and the OD was "Oh Damn" another one is broke. They are fragile.

We had an '89 F150, 302/AOD that had 240K (150K of them hard ones) before the trans keeled. I was duly impressed.

As for this C6, I'm gonna leave it be. That was my original idea, but figured a little outside input would help ease my conscience. Thanx for the feedback.

Mileage on all of them after 86 was better before 87 Arghhhhhhh. Power brake one for more than 5 seconds and kiss them goodbye. Dirt in the fluid even just carbon from burnt fluid and the valve body won't shift. That is my experience. The E4OD was a major rework of the AOD or A4OD and they do even better.
