:? its not??? it is pretty sloppy shifting, in 1st and staying in first i can make it look like its in reverse  i was wondering if maybe its posible that it was reinstalled backwards, i have looked at some other t18 shifters and it looks like the elbow points towards the seat and not the dash panel. :?

maybe the shifter is out of something else. to remove the shift from the some top shifting transmissions. there is a metal slevee you can push down and turn couterclockwise i think to remove the shifter from the trans. you could pull it out and look to se if you can turn it around. i have no idea but i kind of think you might not be able to.

You likely just have a worn out top plate or shifter. The T-18/19's use a single locating pin to keep the shifter from spinning while most everything else has 2 pins. When you pull the shifter out, check to see what shape this pin is in, it's probably widdled down to a sliver. The best fix is to find a better top plate. Just replace the whole shooting match and you won't have to worry about it.

I replaced that locating pin in mine. It was widdled down to a sliver allright. I cut a piece of drill bit shank to the right length. I figured that was the hardest stuff I had handy.

Yup, weld the hole up. ReDrill. Make new pin. Weld up groove in the
ball. Re-cut. Done it. Lasts a couple years. Gets loose again.

Next time I re-do it. I will put a pin on the other side too and cut a groove
in the ball.

Pull your floor mat out, pull the tunnel cover off, pull the whole top plate off and put a new one on. It takes a 1/2 hour. Last time I bought just a top plate it was $20 from a wrecking yard for a 435. The 1-2 shift fork snapped off in the 435 that used to be in my '70. I was about 20 miles from civilization and 50 miles from the nearest wrecking yard. I pulled the top plate and shifted the gears with a screw driver. Drove it all the way there, gear oil everywhere, put the new top plate on in the yard parking lot and went back out in the woods.
