re: MT shift knob
Definately look in old Internationals. They used the T18 and T19 for many years.

No numbers at all. It's a security device now.

Bad thing is, I know that I have one around somewhere. I just have no idea where. I had a T18 in my '64 F250 (still have the trans & 292 Y block in the garage- the truck was scrapped). Drilled & tapped a #13 ball for a shift knob & replaced the original knob in that '64. The #13 knob is on the T19 in my '81 (switched it when I got the '81 back in '97), but the T18 has the old T19 knob on it now. No idea where I put the T18 one. Talk about a confusing scenario. I need another Lonestar........
'69 F350 Project....well, kind of.

I never cared what the shifter knob said on anything I've ever driven as long as it had one. The shifter knob and stick on the NV4500 in my '70 is the original from the 435. It's 100% smooth. I figure I earned that "smoothness" so might as well leave it that way.
If I had a T-18 without a shifter knob, it sounds a little extreme, but I do believe I would throw the transmission away and put a T-19 or 435 in it's place. Reverse being over and up has always driven me nuts on those things. It's terrible when you have several 4 speed bumpsides that you drive regularly and one has a T-18. I can't be the only one that hates the T-18 reverse.

I know the felling. My other truck has a ZF 5spd. I have to remeber not to put my bumo in 5th gear. I usually have more of a problem putting the '96 in reverse.averagef250 wrote:I never cared what the shifter knob said on anything I've ever driven as long as it had one. re: MT shift knob
i dont really care where the reverse is, i had a daytona turbo that p'od me the most when it came to reverse (took 40 mins to figure it out, theres a little switch you have to pull up below the shift knob, then put it in 1st) i just hate the t-18, it probably would be good with towing, but i hate the granny gear, as well as every time i put it in 1st or R, i tap the dash which leaves chips. off topic of the original post but jmo

Jake11,
That's pretty smooth!. I'll have to look more closely at mine. I always thought it had no numbers, I never even thought that they could be worn off.
I like havin' the granny gear. But then my truck is no and never will be a hotrod.

I love a granny and in a 3/4 and up would not own anything else.
A splitter would be nice, but it's only a 250.
Lightning, Heat the lever up and bend it back a little so it clears. Go to
a muffler shop and bribe with beer.

Yeah, the shifter sure shouldn't be hitting the dash in first or reverse. It always seamed to me like the 435 1st got alot closer to the dash than T-18 1st does. Someone could have swapped the wrong stick in at some point. There's probably atleast half a dozen different styles of T-18/T-19 sticks out there. Ford used atleast 3 different styles of 435 stick.
