Help with M5R2/M5OD

Post by averagef250 »

I'm rebuilding an '89 F150 M5R2 5 speed to go in a bumpside 4x4 behind an EFI 4.9 for a customer and the transmission is pretty rough inside. It worked pretty well in the truck it came out of, it just didn't have much in the 3rd or 4th synchro department. I've never opened one of these up before, but I've worked on alot of trannies from 435's, sm420's, NV4500's, tractors and dozers. Figure I should be able to handle this one, but got a couple questions if anybodie's worked on one of these before.

Well, the thrust bearing disintegrated boogering up the input and the mainshaft as well as welding #4 brass to the input. The input gear and cluster are still in good shape and I do believe I can polish the ID of the cluster, the OD of the mainshaft and the 4th synchro hub. Basically, nothing is too boogered to where it can't be fixed, but I don't want to buy an entire rebuild kit for this thing, I just want to get the thrust bearing and the rear input roller bearing. Anybody got some numbers for these 2 bearings? Also, what's the best fluid to run in one of these?

Thanks

I've never had a problem with the plane ole Mercon ATF in our heavily abused -R2's, but others have had good things to say about GM Syncromesh fluid.
