Axle seal leaking????

Post by lrjetmech »

Not sure which seal, gasket, etc. I need to replace, but there is fluid leaking from the right real wheel. I assume it's some sort of axle seal and it's coming from the rear end, but I'm new at all this. The fluid appears to be coming out around the drum. Any suggestions? Haven't pulled anything apart yet! Thanks!

the seal sets behind the wheel bearing if i remember correctly. i ccould be remembering wrong though. but the axle will have to come out anyway. to pull the axle you have to remove the tire and brake drum. then in the axle is a hole you put a socket therough the hole and remove 4 bolts holding the axle in. then pull the axle out. then you can see the seal from there.

Or it could be the brake cylinder leaking but that usually just puts fluid downward around the drum and onto the tire. but it can get all around the drum. check your brake fluid to be able to help verify if the cylinder is leaking.

once you get the drum off you wil be able to tell for sure what is leaking.
