leaking axle seal

Post by mont974x4 »

I have to change the right rear axle seal. I have the removable carrier Ford 9" rear end. Any tips? suggestions? special tools needed to make life easier? :D

Thanks.

Get one of these...about $10-$12 at any parts store. It'll make removal a breeze. :D

Mine is too supposedly. I don't know how to fix. I am considering a lock-right later this summer so I'm not worrying about it now.

morg, you get some grease on the brake shoes and have to do a panic stop in the rain then find yourself sideways, narrowly missing (maybe) other cars and a pole as you hit the curb sideways and bend 2 rims. Ask me how I know.

I have a seal puller like the one pictured above already, but when I went to the store to get the new seal it was a seal/bearing. Will that remove it or do I need a dif. puller?

If you are good with a torch you can cut the old one off and then use a piece of pipe to drive the new one on. Otherwise just take it to someone who has a press.
Make sure you get all the pieces one first before you press on the new bearing. It is a bummer lo get it all together and you forgot the flange. Ask me how I know.

Another "ask me how I know" ? That's rough man, we need to go have a cup of coffee and start a support group for all of us who learn the hard way.

Oh, you're talking about the outer flange seal and not the inner seal. OK, never mind. Do as willowbilly suggests and just take it to the local machine shop and have them do it for you, unless you have access to a press.

Like changing the water pump in a '92 Topaz with a four banger, sometimes it's better to pay someone to do it.
Ask me how I know.
