shifter problem could be the pin that holds it in place. i would pull the boot off the shifter then you can remove the upper plate that goes around the handle. you have to push down and turn at the same time to get it off. kind of hard but it will come off. there is a little dowel on the driver side i believe that will most likely be broken. i have seen this happen a few times.

My trans was the same. The shifter was pretty wonky. I took the cover off and found that the pin was almost gone. I replaced it with a piece from the shaft of a drill bit of the same diameter. I figured that would be pretty hard and should last another 36 years or so.
I have found my truck to be a pretty rewarding thing to learn on. As other's have said, nothing is that complicated on these and I've found parts to be easy to find and affordable too.

I think all the older T18's are like that. I have one. I like to think of
it as character. You can weld up the groove in the ball and re-cut it.
Same with the hole and pin in the cover. It helps.
