Any reason for a new converter?

Post by 69rangerman »

While waiting for my engine to come back (couldn't have gone too far from the look of the bearings), I've been removing, inspecting, cleaning, replacing other stuff. I've replaced the filter, pump, and shaft seals, and flywheel. Is there any reason to replace the converter if all was working well before? It's an FMX.

Not looking to spend more money but also don't want to do this again anytime soon.

Thanks.

Generally, if the tranny was workin good before, there is no reason to change the torque. If you were rebuilding it, then yes, but, the tranny will burn up before the torque. The exception to this is the lockup converters. These have been known to burn the clutches due to slippage (engaging/disengaging excessively) caused by improperly shift point sets.

The best money spent on an auto, is to put a cooler on it. TruCool types are the best. They have temp sensing valves that open more cores as the oil heats up.

I've been thinking about that. Does a cooler by pass the connections to the bottom of the radiator, or do they all work together?

You can do either way. One good thing about keeping the lines in the radiator, is that it warms the oil up for the tranny (though I dont imagine thats a problem in Florida) but works good for us up here (its 38 below right now with a 35 mph wind and 2 feet of snow on the level!)
For you, I would bypass the rad completely. On older rads, there is always the chance corrosion will start a leak, and the possibility of the radcooler plugging from old deposits.

Thanks hillbilly,
Did you way 38 BELOW?! We're hoping it just gets cold enough to want warm turkey for Christmas instead of cold turkey sandwiches in our shorts!

Thanks for the help.

Yup 38 below! We have this thing called "wind chill factor" too. 38 below plus a 25 mph wind equals approx 50 below. Ya, we live in that! The only thing dumber than being here, is, we know its coming every winter and we dont leave! But you will all be happy to know that everybody drives their bumpsides year round in this stuff and I have boosted a lot of newer ones to get them going! Chalk one up for our old trucks!

Hey, Hillbilly, you forgot about the mass exodus every fall from Sask. to Arizona! There are a whole lot of wheat farmers drivin' around Tucson right about now! Stay warm.
