going from the floor back to the column

Post by chips68 »

I have a 68 f100 3spd orginally on the column, a past owner cut a hole in the floor and put in a floor shifter which works fine, but I want to go back orginal. All the parts to the column shifter appear to be there, including the linkage (which rattles against the exaust pipe). The column shifter however has problems, it will move up and down (towards the floor and roof) but won't move back and forth (toward the firewall and steering wheel). What is the diffuculty level of rebuilding it and would it be expensive. And I don't know but I would imagine its just some bearings and bushings? Any knowledge on this would be appreciated

the shifter arm is probably boke or worn getting that part will be the hardest thing you will have to do in rebuilding the column.

It's probably more trouble than its worth. There not all that hard to work
on other than pulling the T/S switch. The parts might be kinda hard to
find. The shift bowls at the top always break where the lever goes in.
They like to get stuck in second too. I had one and liked it, but got fed
up with it and put in a floor shifter.

I would go to the trouble if you want the column shift. That will be the most unusual feature of your truck. I had guys at Walmart tire and lube not able to pull my truck into the bay because they had never seen a 3 speed on the column. Fix it and that will be daring to be different!

Not to hijack the thread, but I want to do the same thing as chips68.... go back to the column shifter. Anyone know where I can get the pin to attach the shift lever to the shift collar on the column?
