1972 F-250 4X4 Wiring Diagram

Post by skeeterg49 »

Please Help!!!

I just bought a '72 F-250 4X4 and the brake lights, park or turn signals don't work. The headlights and interior lights all work. I read all of the posts in here and was wondering if I was looking at maybe having to purchase the turn signal cam and switch. I haven't dove into the column yet. I just wanted to run it by you guys for some tips and suggestions. Also, does anyone have the wiring diagrams for this year of truck. All information is welcome and appreciated!

I'm working at getting the wiring diagrams for each year, but until then all I have are the '67 diagrams. These are posted to the Downloads page.

It sure does sound like a bad turn signal switch to me.

You have the best information about this series of trucks on the web and also the best group of guys too. I look forward to getting the valuable and hard to find information you can come up with. Thanks Again!!!! Billy

I haven't had a whole lot of time to look at the truck due to some crappy cold weather and the fact that I was doing a brake job on the wifes Mercury Villiager and found the right outer tie rod was shot this evening. Anyway back to the truck, when you pull the light switch the headlights come on as well as the dash lights. The dome light doesn't work but I'm assuming it's a bulb that's bad but haven't checked it yet. When I tried the turn signals the left one will come on inside the truck at the dash but not blink and I get nothing for the right side at all. I ran out of time this evening on that van so I'll have to finish it in the morning and then I plan to devote the rest of the weekend to the truck, weather permitting. I don't mind the cold but we had some sleet here today and I'd rather stay out of that. Not fortunate enough to have a grage big enough to put her in but I guess it could be worse. :) Thanks for the input and if you have any other suggestions let me know and i'll post more to let you know what I find. Sounds like a bad turn signal switch to me also. :( The light switch only handles those lights that are on constantly - headlights, running lights, parking lights, dash and switched interior light. The cab light could also have a bad ground. If you watch, the wiring diagrams are available on eBay in black and white. Someone has some '72 wiring diagrams now, but they don't say for a truck. Found none for a truck today, but have purchased '68 and '69. Motor Haven has all manuals for the 1972 on CD for about $50. http://motorhaven.com/home.php?cat=55

Did you check all the bulbs (tail light bulbs, side bed bulbs, front marker bulbs). Clean out the sockets also. One of my tail lights went out and when I turned the signal on the dash light stayed on instead of flashed.

You said you had no brake lights? I am not sure that would be the signal switch :hmm: , but I an not possitive.

Thanks guys. I had a little time to look at her today and when I pulled the instrument panel, I found some wires that weren't hooked up. I haven't had time to check the bulbs yet as that is my next chore. I did check to see if I had power to the switch mounted behind the brake pedal and it was working fine so I can eliminate that for now. I just bought the truck Thursday and this is my first actual project truck. It had a 360ci in it originally and the guy i got it from stuck a 460ci from a 77 Lincoln in it so I am not sure what exactly he did with all of the wiring. I mean it looks like it's all there but I think I'm just going to have to test everything to make sure it works. I'll keep you posted on what I find but without a diagram I'm just flying blind but have my fingers crossed. Thanks guys!!!!!! Billy

What bellhousing and flywheel are you using to get the 460 onto the 435?

That's a good question and I couldn't tell you the answer. I don't know a lot of specific information about that. The guy I bought it from is/was a mechanic and has built a few trucks in the past. He told me he was going to use the truck as a pulling truck/mod bogger. It runs and drives great. All of the drivetrain works good and the 4 wheele drive too. Sorry I can't answer that question for you.

Just a quick update on my wiring... I changed all bulbs and cleaned all connections with contact cleaner and actually got my tail-lights and turn signals to work. I STILL can't get my brake lights to work at all no matter what I try, not to mention the mess of wires I found hiding behind the dash. I ordered a turn signal cam from Napa on Friday so it will be here tomorrow but I don't think this is the problem since the only thing that won't work is the brake lights. :? Well, the weather is supposed to get bad here again, like going from 50 degrees yesterday to 23 degrees tomorrow with some snow so I'm not sure when I'll get another chance at her. I'm also in the process of obtaining or trying to obtain a wiring schematic for 1972 Ford Trucks and as soon as I do I'll let you know. Thanks Billy

Did you check the plunger switch behind the brake pedal arm? Cross the wires and see if the brake lights come on.

Sorry for the lapse in time with this reply. I cleaned the turn signal switch and it works good. Also, the cam works to turn off the signals on both sides. I tried jumping the switch and didn't get any brake lights. I also got a wiring diagram for 1972 F Series that Keith will be getting a copy of. I haven't given up on it yet but those darn electrical problems can get to you after a while.

Just a quick update on my wiring problem. After going through and cleaning all connections and sorting the wiring mess at the rear of the truck, I now have brake lights but my turn signals won't work. I finally figured it out to be the darn turn signal switch. I'm going to order one and get it put on asap and thanks to all of you guys for the great help!!!!! I would just like to give this site some much deserved applause.
