truck died

Post by mont974x4 »

The other day I was on the way home after picking up my boys and the truck just died and wouldn't restart. I promptly drained the battery trying to get going again. I waited for a break in traffic(I was in the middle lane at an intersection) and let her roll down hill and into a parkinglot. I had dad come give me a jump and went straight to a shop to have alt. and battery tested. Both were low but good. I went to shut the truck down again and....stayed running.I reached behind the dash and found the wires going into the ignition switch. The brown wire was hot. I wiggled them and the truck shut down. A couple of the wires had been spliced into by past owners and one strand of wire was sticking into another wire and causing issues. Then Friday I was almost home and she died again. I let her coast to a stop in front of the house and let her sit over the weekend while I was out of town. Last night I changed the ignition switch and still no start. I checked the wires again and found the brown had gotten so hot that it melted the insulation and broke. I cut the the burned ends off and repaired the wire. I then let it run for 10 minutes and then took it on a short drive. So far no problems. The truck starts, runs, and shuts down right...and the wires aren't getting hot.

 I'll see how she does today, and let ya know. Hopefully this will help one of ya'll troubleshoot your truck.

No more problems today. I drove my normal routes today and the truck ran normal. I checked the wires when I got to work this morning and again when I got home...they were good to go.

daughter? (I have 4 sons and no daughters  )

 By playing the crazy redneck my neighbors leave me alone. :hmm: Something about walking around barefoot in a pair of jeans drinking beer carrying various weapons or power tools etc. must scare them. Either that or they're afraid one of my sons will corrupt one of their daughters.

I actually drove it 5 miles with the fusible link like literally starting fires, lol the truck wuold top out at 20mph, or just keep dying. That was when i was 15 and didn't know jackshit though, so dont flame 8)

 I'm just trying to keep my sons from having to tell me the same thing I told my dad way to young in life. I think my habits, although normal for us rednecks, scare the city folks enough to keep them out of my garage/yard/business.

That wire's supposed to be pink? really? I really need to find a good wiring diagram. :hmm:

I got my new rear view mirror installed today. I also replaced the washer res. and pump. My sprayers are a steady stream at the top of the windshield but they work now.

:shh: bought a new edelbrock performer 600 carb for $200. I also have a new 15" oak and billet steering wheel that will be installed in the next day or 2. along with the new heater motor and fan.

Just hit the "Quote" button in the upper-right corner of the person's reply you want to quote. You can also edit their quote, by deleting portions of it that aren't necessarily pertinent to your reponse. That's a very nice thing to do when quoting someone who rambled on forever....heh...not that anyone here would do that. ;)
