Tremec TKO 3550 5-Speed tranny is a nice one.
I'm not sure if the Factory Fox Body Mustang T-5 will work, but i'm sure that Tremec one will.

The TKO, the T-5, the M5OD, pretty much anything that will fit the 5.0 or the 351W will work with a 6-bolt 289. The M5OD is a truck transmission.

The only down side to the T-5 is that it is a light duty car tranny and won't hold up real well in a truck if you use it as a truck.

If it is just gonna be a driver/cruiser then the T-5 will work. Just don't hammer it to hard or it will go boom.

You can also put the 5 speed behind a 240 or 300 I6 as it has the same bellhousing pattern.

Or if you want a granny and OD, a ZF from a 88+ F-2/350 is a nice unit.

Yeah, I agree with Spartman. If it's for a truck, avoid the T-5. It's made for lightweight cars, and sometimes it won't even handle those if they're driven hard.

Depends on if it's a regular T-5 or a T-5Z or whatever. Friend of mine has a 400+hp FE in a 67 Mustang fastback with a T-5Z no problem at all. And he doesn't drive it lightly.

I think any transmission in the T-5 family will work. I remember seeing an article in a Mustang magazine one time that talked about the swap. I believe there were adaptor plates to get a T-5 for the 5.0 motor to fit up with the 289. Also I think Jay Leno put one of the Borg 6 speeds behind a 289.
Also, don't worry about the punishment on the T-5's. They are actually pretty tough transmissions. Third gear seems to be the weak link on them, but I haven't had any problems with my Cobra and it's pushing 300hp. The problem was fixed with the T-56 that Ford put behind the 4.6's.

5.0s are 302s which share the same basic block with the 65-up 289s. The only difference is before that the bellhousing had 5 bolts rather than 6.
