90w...50w....ATF?
What's the proper weight lube/oil to run in a np435 tranny? i bought this truck in august and changed all my gear lube in tranny, t-case, diffs and closed knuckles, i just used 90w in everything except the knuckles (140w)........ in august with temps in the 80's the tranny shifted great but we've already got 20 degree mornings here in montana and i don'
t know if it's my synchronizers or what but the gears "clash" when i try to shift (at least until the engine reaches temp or the day heats up).....i've had guys tell me to use 50w above 30 degrees and use 30w below 30 degrees and i've even had one guy tell me to use ATF!
I was always under the impression these trannys just took 90w gear lube and did ok, are there any additives such as one of the many lucas products that help with cold weather shifting or is that stuff just "voodoo juice"? thanks.

They all do that when it gets cool. You used the right oil in it. That 90wt
is like glue when it gets cold. The only thing I could say is warm it up a
bit before you drive it. I got a T18 and it's the same deal.

I have heard the 40wt 50wt thing before??
I have allways just used 80w90 and never had a problem.
But you guys are right I think they are all stiff when cold.
I will check the ford manual here in a minute...

Allright,
It does say in the ford shop manual to use motor oil..
and it gives a graph of what oil to use at what temperatures.
It looks like you wanna run straight 40wt
But as I said I have allways run 80w90 so I think you are ok either way

I'm bout an hour west of you hardtailjohn, in Libby. Thanks 67highboy, i've heard that too bout using straight weight motor oil according to the temperature, but on 30+ year old parts i'd be afraid to run 40w in there (seems kinda thin) but i could see doing that on a fresh tranny, i've just always heard guys running 90w in those trannys, i guess i'll just play it by ear and see how things go this winter, maybe this tranny was rebuilt recently by a previous owner, i dunno (yeah right...) thanks for advice though.

MTHiboy... cool... thought that kinda looked like Libby in those pics! We'll have to have a Montana Meet and Greet some day... I used to spend some time up there....
I run 50W in my boxes all the time in my bump...and in all my big truck transmissions too... no problem.

Need to run 50lb oil in the cold like what you get. There is a reason for that. Oil does not get into the tight areas if it is to thick.

re: 90w...50w....ATF?
what about the mobil 45w-90 gear oil?....
the other option (better than ATF)
is this stuff:
http://www.viscosityoil.com/hy-tran.htm
or
http://www.deere.com/en_US/parts/partsi ... aulic.html
more info here: (link to orig thread in my first post, cliff's note in the 3rd post)
http://forum.streetcommodores.com.au/sh ... hlight=ATF
if it works for 40,000lb heavy equipment and is good from -20 to 140*
seems like it would be good for an NP435...
i have a 5 gal bucket that i want to put in my nova's TH400, and maybe the twin engine 442, cost me ~62$
maybe i'll get another one for the 68
just adding another option i guess...discuss?
Regards, James

re: 90w...50w....ATF?
My '70 Dodge W200 had the NP435 and I always ran 90wt in it. When I got my '72 Ford, I noticed a sticker inside the glove box door that said use 50wt in the Transmission and T-case. In fact, it even says to use lighter (30 or 40) in cold weather. I was skeptical at first, but all the manuals and factory publications agreed.
I have been using 50wt for 4 years and it has been working fine. Leaks a lot more than i imagine 90 wt would, but no lubrication problems.

re: 90w...50w....ATF?
I guess there are a lot of options/opinions out there on what weight oil to use, thanks for all the input, i came across some factory service manuals at the library and as some of you guys stated in your replies ford calls for 50w in those trannys, and even 40w or 30w depending on climate temp. so i don't know, i've always used 90w myself so i'll just play it by ear and see how things go, maybe put in a 45w-90w or straight 50w before winter (which can be -20 here )
