Dana 60 Axle Gear Oil

Post by jetmech »

I want to change the fluid in my rear axle, a limited slip Dana 60, in a 71 F250. I intend to replace the pinion seal at the same time. What weight fluid? How much will it take? Does limited slip require a special kind of fluid? Do I jack each wheel separately to ensure it fills each wheel hub? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

when I did mine (also a d60 limited slip) a just used 90wt gear oil, and filled it until it poured out of the filler hole. Dont worry about the hubs, they will get filled up. If you want, you can spin them a couple of times, wait 5 minutes, and check fluid level again.
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.

Get the GL-5 gear oil used for limited slips.

you need to limited slip additive in order to lubricate the slip clutches in the differential, so that your limited slip can work, you won't need to jack it up, but just make sure you get a good pinion seal on it. also you might just pull the cover off of the back of it and replace that seal to.
